Single Data Point Experiments: Birth and Male Methotrexate Users

There’s a line about astronomers using a single data point with huge error bars to fit lines to that you hear in many physics talks and lectures. This is usually to cover up the fact that the data being discussed has only a few points with even larger errors bars, but it does pose the question about how you interpret real world limited data sets. In the physical sciences it’s usually straightforward to run the experiment again (unless you are looking at a supernova), but in the life sciences gaining data can be far more problematic.

An example of this difficultly has been evident in my home life recently, with the birth of my daughter last week. I have fairly mild (earlish onset) rheumatoid arthritis, for which I have taken various different medications over the years. The most current one is called methotrexate and doubles up as a chemotherapy drug if you happen to have cancer. There are lots of potential side effects, as with most drugs, but with methotrexate they are a little more probable than with others. You have to have continuing blood tests to make sure your liver function is OK, for example. One significant warning is that you should not get pregnant while taking it, and that this warning applies to men as well as women. And then we found out we were going to have a baby…

Initially there is the concern that something very bad is likely to happen to your baby. The warnings are clear, DO NOT get pregnant while taking this drug. The possible side effects for the baby are also clear. Methotrexate can cause fetal abnormalities, especially head and limb deformities. The reasons seem to be that folic acid is an antagonist for folic acid, and a reduction in folic acid during pregnancy and prior to pregnancy leads to such deformities. The other major problem is that methotrexate would appear to lead to spontaneous abortions in some cases, and it can be used as part of a planned termination, for example.

At times like these, you turn to the internet, and you find that the answers are not as clear cut as the labels on the bottle make out. Because of the different uses of methotrexate there are different dosage regimes, and for arthritis (and it should be noted that it is not medically clear why methotrexate works for arthritis, which I always find odd) you are typically on a much lower dose compared to someone with cancer. In addition, while there seems to be a body of data dealing with females taking methotrexate while in pregnancy, there are hardly any trials or significant data on what happens if the male is taking it when conception happens. For women, I think the data points to a significant risk of birth deformities should you get that far, for men it is hard to say. Certainly for low doses there seems to be no evidence (either way) that there is any adverse effect. The problem is that there is really no way to carry out a trial, other than by monitoring those births that take place. And as far as I am aware there is no-one doing this. So I am very much a single data point.

The consultant that we saw when we discussed these issues didn’t seem to have much of an clear idea bout the risks. She looked up some papers, as I did  I, and showed them to us. She suggested that if the pregnancy got past the third month all such be well, as any chromosomal damage would likely be significant and would cause auto-termination. She had another patient who had done the same thing and all had been well. Her thinking seemed sound, and was more or less the same conclusion my wife and I came to having read the literature that we could access. But could the evidence be stronger? My thinking is that this data is valuable, and if every consultant has, say, one or two such cases a year, they could pool that data and produce a clear analysis. What good would that do? Well, it would bring clarity to the risks and outcome eventualities. What if no child born to an adult male taking low dose methotrexate in the UK ever had deformities (or at least no more than is statistically normal)? We could then alter the drug safety advice and, I suspect, make a a good number of pregnancies a lot more stress free, which has to be good for mother, baby and father alike.

Having written this, I suppose I should try and do something about collating this data myself. So maybe watch this space for a male methotrexate fathers data collection website. More generally, it would be really great if the NHS could be more joined up about this, and where unusual medical issues arise they should be collated. Open data is what is needed, and then people to mine it.

Our baby is three days old, is doing well and showing no ill-effects of her stress filled start to life.

I just found out I’m pregnant and my husband also takes methotrexate. As you did I went right to the internet to find info and all I found was effects when the mother took the drug. I’m glad to hear all was well with your new baby. It gives me hope that maybe everything will be ok.

    • March 28, 2012 at 8:38 am

Patti, first of all, congratulations! I’m just sorry that your situation is likely to give rise to extra stress. It does seem unfortunate that there isn’t more info out there on this, especially given the fairly severe warnings given on the medicine. In our case the main thing that we were able to do was to get extra ultrasound scans around 3-4 months just to make sure there were no obvious deformities. I honestly can’t tell you want we would have done had there been anything wrong, but I suppose it would have given use time to adjust and to plan ahead. In our case it gave us piece of mind and we were able to mostly get on with dealing with and planning for a normal pregnancy. I wish you and your husband all the very best, and based on the evidence that I read, I don’t think there is a huge amount to worry about.

Hi, could you tell me what dosage you was on, as I THINK I’m pregnant and my partner is on 10mg of methotrixate a week.. And I’m scared to do a pregnancy test.

    • June 23, 2012 at 3:29 pm

      Hi Sarah,

I take 15mg per week. As I suggest in my post I don’t see any specific evidence that links lose dose methotrexate use by males leading to any increased risk of fetal abnormalities. So, take the test, speak to your doctor, and try and not stress about things too much. I know we are only a single data point, but our daughter is now 3 months old and getting along just fine.

Very interesting David – my wife and I would love more children but I am currently on methotrexate for severe psoriasis and cannot afford to come off the medication. I have found similar research to you with regards to little data available for children born with the father on methotrexate. There is plenty regarding women on methotrexate, but research on the male tends to be based around infertility, not baby deformities, etc. I am actually discussing this with my GP today. Look forward to any further research progress. Thanks. Doug.

    • July 9, 2012 at 9:48 am

Hi Doug, I wish you all the best. The sad fact is that the data needed is probably there, but just isn’t collected and analysed. If a pregnancy occurs where the father is on methotrexate my impression is that the outcome is never recorded anywhere, and hence we end up where we are now, largely ignorant.

    Hi Doug
Glad to hear you have a healthy baby but sorry you had so much worry. I discovered 2 weeks ago that I am pregnant whilst my husband is taking 15mg Methotrexate per week. We immediately panicked as my husband had been given stern warnings that he should not be taking the drug if we planned to get pregnant. (We were lucky enough to have 2 children already and had resigned ourselves to the fact that another one would now be out of the question.) My husband called his consultant for advice and was told that although it was not ideal, I should not have any higher chance of having an abnormal baby than in a normal pregnancy – we were both very reassured. The call was followed up by a letter confirming this and mentioning the lack of reported cases of fathering children whilst on Methotrexate but in those which have been reported that there has not been any evidence that this causes significant problems. The letter will be helpful in assisting the medical professionals involved in my pregnancy care to not treat my pregnancy as high risk (I hope). My GP did not seem overly concerned when I mentioned it either. It seems to me that the drug companies are covering their own backs due to the lack of evidence or research into the matter by stating that fathers should not be taking Methotrexate where a couple wish to have a child. I’m glad that my husband has such a level headed consultant and hope that such an attitude becomes more widespread throughout the medical profession so that less pregnancies are marred by unnecessary worry.

Hello my husband is also on methotrexate and we have also just tested positive. We have read the negative information and are very worried but are trying to be strong.

    • July 31, 2012 at 8:55 pm

      Hi Jennie,

I hope it all works out for you. As I and others here have suggested the evidence for any problems beyond what might be normally expected doesn’t seem to be there. Talk to your doctor and then hopefully you can have a stress free pregnancy.

        Hi
I am really thankful to you for putting up such details on this issue. As I m in the same situation, and the first rescue is searching online on any issue bothering you.
My husband is on Methotrexate from last 4 years and that’s the reason we were not planing the baby. I conceived my first child a month ago when he started the treatment and now after 4 years I came to know that I m 4 weeks pregnant, which was very frustrating for me.
I am going to have an appointment with my GP and will update here.

I am 14 weeks pregnant 8 months after being treated with methotrexate only for chorio. I was adviced to wait a year before getting pregnant. Its not easy at all with all e anxiety and stress. I pray that everything goes well.

    Any way congratulations!

    Hi,

Thank you for your information. I am in the states, and am on methotrexate. We recently had a pregnancy ‘scare,’ which was exactly that. A scare. As a man, I was terrified as to what could be wrong with our child and that I could be responsible for it. No where on the internet could I find ANY information leading me to reason in any direction, so I panicked.

While it’s not “medically concrete,” I don’t care. I appreciate your information and you putting it out there. It has made me feel a little more at ease in case it become a reality that we are. (taking the test tonight.) Thank you again! It’s people like you who make people like me stress a little less!

    • October 17, 2012 at 1:46 pm

Rick – I hope all went well with your test, and thanks for the kind words.

Wow- Am i glad i came across this site, everywhere else i stumbled has such negativity, i too had a positive result tonight it will be child number 4 but my husband has been taking mtx 15mg for the past 2 years (weekly)… as soon as i got the result and showed him he immediately panicked and explained the consultant totally stressed not to fall pregnant whilst on this drug – im unsure where to go from here, but i need him on my side.. i am so pleased your baby girl is healthy and doing well, im sure all this stress and panicking isnt doing me any good and ive only known now for 2 hrs !

    • November 30, 2012 at 9:05 am

HI Stacey, many congratulations! I think I had a fairly similar reaction when I fond out my wife was pregnant. The message is that this is bad, but while this seems to be true if the female is taking the drug there seems to be little evidence to support that if it is the male. I take 15mg per week of methetraxate, and if you look at the research literature there is both very little evidence and also very little data that there is too much to worry about, especially on these ‘lower’ doses. At the ante-natal clinic our consultant looked up the research herself, and could find little to worry about, other than all the normal things that might go wrong. Her anecdotal evidence was that she had seen this circumstance once or twice before, and all had been well. So my advice is to talk to your doctor, do a little reading if you can, and try and relax – my advice for your husband would be much the same. I hope it all works out for you.

Thank you so much for sharing your story! My husband is on MTX weekly for psoriatic arthritis. I got pregnant right before he started taking it last year (my son is about to be 8 months), but I had sadly written off having a second child because the MTX helps my husband so much that I would never ask him to stop taking it. He’s also on Enbrel though so pregnancy still scares me because both drugs fall into the “we don’t really understand why they work, they just do” category. Ironically I developed a severe folic acid deficiency while pregnant my son and doctors convinced me that he was going to have a severe NTD. He’s perfectly healthy I should add : ) Anyway, thank you again for sharing!

My husband is on MTX and recently found out that I was pregnant. I couln’t believe it and have been depressed since his doctor had advised him that I shouldn’t get pregnant. The next day he called his doctor and she told him that I should go to my doctor so she can examine me and have her call her so they can discuss the situation. My appointment is 12/31/12. Don’t even know how far along in the pregnancy i am. Anyway my husband is taking 2.5mg. that is very low. Should i be worried or be rest assured my child will diffinitely be normal?. I don’t want to abort the child which is what we were planning on doing if this is going to be a stressfull experience. What do you think? I will keep you posted.

    • December 31, 2012 at 3:54 pm

Hi Rebecca – I think the best advice is to talk to your doctor and see what they say. Our doctor gave us various bits of info and some research, and with her experience was able to reassure us that there wasn’t too much to worry about. We were given an extra scan just to make sure there was nothing untoward happening. As I said in my post there seems to be little evidence of any real problems with the male taking small doses of the drug (I was on much higher doses than your husband). Hopefully your appointment went well today and you got all your questions answered.

Hi, Thanks so much for getting back to me. I did go today for my appointment and of course was very nervous. But to be honest, i was reassured by the doctor that I should not have anything to worry about. She also confirmed that the studies are mainly on women and that if the women take MTX that is when it is dangerous. She said a lot of times studies are done on women. She said that there are many tests that I will be taking to make sure everything is going well. She also advised me to speak to a genetic counseler. I had a sonogram done today and everything looks great. I am 9 weeks pregnant which came to a big shock to me since I thought I was probably only a couple of weeks. Due date August 3rd. I will keep you posted. How is your little one doing? God Bless you and your family and have a Happy New Year.

HI Rebecca, Happy New Year! Glad to hear your doctor’s trip was a positive one. I wish you all the best until August! Our daughter is coming up for 10 months and is doing just great. Just about ready for crawling!

hi there, my husband was informed by his nurse (he was on methotrexate for crohns disease) that we have to terminate, he was obviously upset and tried to justify our situation, he said “but I stopped taking it about 3 weeks before she fell pregnant” to which the nurse reiterated that it will need to end in a termination. We were gutted and I went to my GP the same day, he said he had never heard any evidence to suggest male methotrexate use would affect development and that actually it was our choice whether or not we went ahead…we just had our 20 week anomaly scan last monday and just wanted to say everything with our baby girl looks as good as it can do at this stage….needless to say i’m very cross with the nurse!

    • January 31, 2013 at 9:05 am

      Hi Sam,

Glad to hear things are going well for you. It’s always good to get a second opinion, and clearly with male methotrexate use there is a lot of confusion surrounding the possible side effects.

I cant say how happy I am that I have found this page, my husband is on 20mg methotrexate per week for Churg Strauss Vasculitis and we wanted to have a baby and were told by his GP that there is no way it could happen as the baby would be deformed no doubt about it. But then he spoke to his specialist and he said that there is no evidence to suggest that on low dose there is anything to be concerned about. Hearing that still dosent ease my mind of all the what could go wrongs that are plastered everywhere for people on this drug. But reading all the above posts have made me feel a bit better about the whole situation. I really do hope there is some collation of data from any medical researcher and that there is some research done on this as it is quite stressful when you have one medical professional saying one thing and another a completly different thing, you are then left wondering well who is right?? If I bring a baby into this world will it be ok? So I am super happy for you.

    • February 19, 2013 at 5:24 pm

I’m gald you’ve found the comments useful Julia. I think it is clear that this is not a very rare problem and that drug companies and doctors need to be much clearer about the real risks of using certain drugs. Obviously I’d always recommend speaking to a doctor before embarking on anything, but I would hope you’d get positive information.

I have been on MTX 20mg for 2 years and recently found out my wife is pregnant potentially been so for 2-3 months, have appointment soon but after research on net had contemplated termination. Now having read this site it is worth possibly to pursue the route of scans to find out if baby is healthy or not as she has not taken any supplements and put it down to stomach cramps from dieting!!

Hi. My husband was on methrotexate -20 mg a week when we conceived a baby. Hes a lovely 17 month old boy and the entire pregnancy ran without any problems. Now , wehappened to be pregnant again, and although the plan was for him to go off it, he was still on methrotexate when i fell pregnant. Im seeing the consultant about it and praying he is not going to say anything which is going to shatter my peace. At this stage im perfectly relaxed about the outcome of the pregnancy, Good luck to all of you!

Hello, My DH is also on MTX for RA. We were also told not to conceive due to numerous potential defects bubs may have. So DH was told to stop taking MTX for at least 3 months prior to us TTC, it took us 12 months… Meaning he was off MTX for 12 months. Our beautiful little girl is perfect and has just turned 1. The problem now is two fold, we want another baby but due to DH stopping MTX for so long he has never fully recovered and suffers so much more now. He is about to commence Humira due to his RA not responding as we’ll as it used to prior to him ceasing MTX for the 12 months, he has also now developed crohns, which I don’t think is related to him stopping MTX. Can you get pregnant on Humira or will it be the same story?
Thank you for this site…I wish I’d discovered it earlier…

  16. May 11, 2013 at 12:05 pm

Wow it is great to hear some positive stories. My husband is taking 10 mg of MTX weekly, and we are a young couple with no kids. He tried to go off the medication, he made it 4 months but I didn’t get pregnant during that time. I tried to go back on birth control, but they made me extremely ill. We are still really stressed about what to do, because everyone is telling us that I need to be on some form of birth control, but we really want a baby. At least I know there are other people out there dealing with the same issues. Thanks. 🙂

I posted here last July having discovered I was pregnant whilst my husband was taking MTX, but wanted to repost and update on the outcome of my pregnancy. We were fortunate that both my husband’s consultant and the staff looking after me during my pregnancy were very sensible and did not give us any cause for alarm. My pregnancy went well and we now have a beautiful 6 week old and so far healthy daughter. I am really alarmed that people in a similar situation are being told to terminate their pregnancies – this advice is not being given on the basis of medical research, but due to the lack of research into this aspect of the drug. I was told that my pregnancy did not carry any more risk that a normal pregnancy for someone of a similar age, which enabled me to get on and enjoy being pregnant. Its a shame that other people’s pregnancies are being spoilt by a lack of information.

    • May 13, 2013 at 8:20 pm

My husband and I conceived by accident – my husband was told not to take MTX if we were planning to increase our family, and on reading the blurb, I also thought that the drug would possibly affect my husband’s fertility. We’ve had a healthy baby girl but not planning any more – don’t want to take a chance a second time having already had 2 boys previously and feeling very blessed to have the family we have.

Found your blog from a google search about pregnancy when father is on MTX. Glad to hear the outcome of your experience. My husband has been on MTX since April for very mild case of RA. Like you only does 7 pills a week. Very low dose. I was off my pill this month and now think there is a chance I am pregnant. Won’t be able to test really until next week. At my last GYN appt she did say for him to be off MTX for 3 months before trying. As did his Rhemy. I just wasn’t think about the potential this month as I waited for apt to refill pill script. This information is VERY helpful if I am indeed expecting. Thank you everyone who posted.

Thanks for the link to the new survey, that’s really interesting and I think the conclusions will do a lot to allay people’s concerns. Odd, now, to think how worried we were for a time.

Hello, I am following this blog for 1 month and it helped me when facing the dilemma whether to keep the baby or not.. Me husband and I are in a similar situation. Our first baby was conceived in vitro, because my husband’s semen analysis was very bad and we were told that it was impossible to conceive naturally. Soon after our daughter was born, my husband started taking methotrexate (15 mg/week). Around Christmas 2013 I found out that I was pregnant. The impossible has happened. We were very worried at the beginning, almost certain that we will have to terminate the pregnancy, but after seeing a doctor, we were advised to keep the baby if no medical reasons for termination are seen. I am 10th week now and waiting for my fetal morphology scan and biochemistry screening in 12th week. I hope that everything will be ok. The good thing is, I don’t have much time to worry, because my daughter started walking a short time ago and is having all my time and attention..

I am so glad I found this page!
My partner is on MX and we got pregnant by accident in 2013. Sadly we had a missed miscarriage at 12 wks, baby stopped at 7wks 3 days. We were so worried it was due to his meds but as it was my 4th pregnancy and stats for miscarriage are 1 in 4 it could be that.
He had his dose lowered (not sure to what) but this week we found we are pregnant! We are so scared anyway so finding this has put my mind at rest at least a little.
It was so confusing researching all the conflicting advice but no actual examples.
Please pray we have a healthy pregnancy this time and I will be back to update.

      Hi Krissie
My husband is taking 8mg methotrexate weekly as well. His rheumatologist told us that we can get pregnant and that there’s no evidence that the MTX has any effect on fetus.
I found out that I was pregnant in June of this year. I went for my normal ultrasound on my 11th week but the ultrasound technician told me that she couldn’t find the heart beat and the my Dr told us that the baby has not grown since 8th week and has no heart beat since then.
I not sure if it’s bcoz of my husband taking MTX or if it’s just normal miscarriage. I’m very scared to get pregnant again while he’s on MTX.
I would really appreciate if Update me that how your 2nd pregnancy went?

I’m so sorry to hear of your miscarriage. It’s a very hard thing to go through, but know that you aren’t alone.

I’ve posted here a couple times, but I might as well provide an update. I just had my 2nd kid while on 15mg of mtx. I now have a healthy 26 month old and 1 month old.

There is still nothing linking paternal use of mtx to birth complications. Keep in mind that unfortunately miscarriages are not uncommon early in the pregnancy. I’m sorry you had to go through this, but it seems really really really unlikely that it’s mtx-related. Of course, you can discuss with all your doctors.

        Hi Sanjo..
I went through the same thing you did. My husband is also taking 8mg of methotrexate weekly. At my 11 week appointment we were told that the baby stopped growing at 9 weeks. I was suppose to be due on Feb 1st. My Dr does not believe that the miscarriage happened due to my husband being on Methotrexate. I requested further testing and it turns out I carry an abnormal clotting gene for factor V which increases risk for miscarriage. When my husband and I are ready to try again I will be put on blood thinners throughout the whole pregnancy.
        I hope this helps.

My hubby is taking methotrexate for severe psoriasis, we have been trying 2 years for a baby and had 2 miscarriages with in the first 6 weeks only today we found out methotrexate could be affecting this.

This article is clear-headed, and I’m thankful for all of the other commenters who provide their own testimonies. For those who would not only want to rely on comments, I direct you to this recent study: http://rheumatology.oxfordjournals.org/content/53/4/757

Maybe this will be comforting to some who have become pregnant by accident.

I was on 15mg mtx when my wife and I were ready to try for our first kid almost 2 years ago now. My specialist was very clear that there was no evidence that mtx could cause problems (other than maybe lower sperm count) for men. After doing tons of reading online (surely the same articles you read), I felt comfortable enough to try to conceive while on mtx.

We now have a wonderful 1.5 year old child.

I, too, wish there were more research on this. We’re about ready to try for kid #2, and my new specialist is less comfortable with me trying to conceive on mtx.

I’d like to reiterate to everyone who’s terrified after finding out they’re pregnant while the father-to-be is on mtx: don’t stress. There’s no evidence to suggest that your pregnancy is any more at risk than a couple where the father isn’t on mtx.

    Are you collecting Data?
I conceived my third child when my husband had just started MTX for crohns. He’s a healthy 3yo. We found similar information at the time. I remember seeing a table of Outcomes from a small study has anyone seen this?
We have just lost a daughter at 22wks due to Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18). Struggling not to blame the MTX and see it as one of those things. Hope that’s the grief talking because statistically someone was due to have this outcome. We’d like to try again but scared.

Thank you all for sharing your stories. This is the only page I found information and hope. I’m 5 weeks pregnant and my husband is on methotrexate. It’s the injection form at 8mg per week. May I be at greater risk since it’s the injection and not the pill?
I hope I have the same positive outcome as many as you have.

    • June 6, 2015 at 8:57 am

      HI Leanne,
When I wrote the original post I was (and still am) on 15mg of tablets each week. I’m not sure on the reasons for injection over tablets, but would imagine the lower dose your husband is on wouldn’t increase any risk over the normal higher tablet doses. Congratulations on your pregnancy and I hope it all goes well for you. While single data points are really just anecdotal evidence, out daughter is now a very healthy 3 year old, off to her morning French class just now.

Thank you very much for your reply. I was very happy to see positive outcomes on here, it has given me and my husband hope. In a pacnicked situation, as soon a found out I was pregnant I scheduled and appoint to terminate my pregnancy. My husband and I were devestated that something horrible can possibly go wrong because he’s on Methotrexate. Since his Dr really stressed the fact that he had to be off his medication for at least 6 months prior to me getting pregnant. After finding your page, I have decided that I’m going to continue my pregnancy and pray that all goes well. I will be seeing my ObGyn soon and will be updating on here soon.
Congratulations on your beautiful daughter and thank you so much 🙂

Hi again, I first wrote on Jan 30th 2013 to share the good news about my 20 week anomaly scan following advice to terminate owing to my husbands methotrexate. Just to update-as I get email notifications, and see there are still some worried mums to be… My baby girl is two on friday, she is perfectly healthy, red hair – fiery temper to match and I wish there were more websites to reassure mums-to-be in the same situation. If I had followed original medical advice our Sofia wouldn’t be here now

      Thank you so much Sam,
After reading all these comments I feel much better and not as stressesed. I have faith everything will be okay. I will update on here in hopes to help other families going through the same situation many of us have.
I’m happy to know that your daughter Sofia is a healthy toddler.. Happy Birthday to her. 🙂

    Hi,

I have been looking at your site over a numbers of years now, as my husband is on Methotrexite and has been for the past 3 years.
He take 25mg once a week.

We would like to add to our family however when he has tried to come off the medication he has only lasted a few weeks.
We went to a consultant appointment last week, and when mentioning adding to our family the reply was “that’s fine” it was only me and my husband saying shouldn’t he come off the medication for 3 months she replied with
” yes but there has been lots of healthy babies whilst taking Methotrexite ”
    This made us very confused.

What she has given my husband is cortisone tablets 5mg a day.
I was just wounding if this has been the case for anyone else?
Is 3 months off Methotrexite long enough?
I’ve ready on some sites that one month for a man is fine?
Or has there been more babies whilst taking Methotrexite?
There just dont seem consistent information out there.
    Thank you in advance x

If you read through this page and all the comments, I think you’ll see that there’s no evidence that suggests the father even needs to come off methotrexate at all. Different doctors seem to have different opinions, but I think the point of this blog post and of many of the comments is that you should feel comfortable trying to conceive while the father is on methotrexate.

Hello all, glad to fall on this website while searching! Had a test two days ago, and was surprised to find out I am pregnant again! My husband is on MTX (10mg/week) for 6 months now. I was really scared when he pointed out to me today that we didn’t think of the possible impacts of the pills he is on…so I started straggling for answers over the internet. I have an appointment with my gynaecologist in a couple of days and will sure go through some detailed questions to him. Though, I am very relieved by reading all the experiences passed by all people here. Thank you very much…Hopefully I will be updating with great news..

I am very concerned because my sons ex-girlfriend try to terminate her pregnancy and was given a Methotrexate drink. She has since then changed her mind about terminating the pregnancy and wants to keep the baby. She is an unhealthy nineteen-year-old. Are there any studies on babies that have survived and are doing well?

    • February 15, 2017 at 8:57 am

Hi Sandra, sorry I’m not sure about studies on healthy children in the situation you describe. My original post was focussed on male use of methotrexate, and the circumstances and consequences in male and female use are rather different.

Hi everyone. Ive followed this for a number of years after a pregnancy scare back in 2012. As my hubby takes 15mg MTX every week for his arthritis.
This was as i say a scare but last year we found out we where expecting for real. All the warnings about conceiving whilst taking the drug came flooding back.
We went ahead. There was never another option for us. It was a difficult pregnancy but nothing to do with baby im always ill whilst carrying and dont take pregnancy well. This being our 4th child together we knew it was to be our last. Cutting a long story short. We have a 5 month old baby girl. Who is 100% healthy happy and thriving.
Hubby has now had a vasectomy so no more surprises for us.
But for those who find them selves afraid looking for information after all those warnings have been given. Finding this page as they are not many out there. Have faith, stay strong healthy and positive. Every thing really should be ok.

This does seem to be a fairly definitive trial – I’ll see if I can make a copy of the paper open for everyone to read.
